Heraclis Ice Cream: The authentic ice cream of Cyprus
The everyday life hero and hardworking man, Heraclis Dimitriou
He fought really hard until he became a successful businessman. We are in the 1930s, an era when ice cream was considered a luxury. In 1939, young Heraclis opened a small café; the same spot where the store is located today, at 110 Ledra Street. Shortly after, he added more options on the menu apart from the coffee and sweets made by his wife Evangelia, from Smyrna. He offered ice cream produced by himself. His task was not easy at all at the time. The way ice cream was made back then had nothing to do with how it is produced today, as the process then was a true ritual.
Our first flavors
Heraclis started with the production of 5 basic ice cream flavors: vanilla, chocolate, roasted peanut, strawberry and lemon, while today more than 35 flavors are available to enjoy. The main recipe has been the same for 80 years now. The basic ice cream ingredients are fresh milk, fresh eggs, sugar, corn flour and vanilla aroma, while the sorbet ice cream flavors are made from fresh fruit. Gradually, the small coffee shop has evolved into a large ice cream industry that has become the longest ice cream industry to operate in Cyprus so far.
The evolution of Heraclis Ice Cream
Within a few years, the small café turned into a lifestyle ice cream shop and over time the business has expanded to other cities around Cyprus with stores in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta.
Since 1939, Heraclis ice cream is considered the most favorite habit of the people of Nicosia. During every walk at “Makridromos” as Ledra Street was called back then, the iconic signage “Heraclis Ice Cream” attracted all the wonderers as it continues to do so until today.
